WebMar 19, 2024 · WASHINGTON, March 19, 2024 – Last week, USDA-trained detector dogs played a major role in the seizure of smuggled pork from China where there is an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). The highly contagious and deadly disease affects both domestic and feral (wild) pigs and there is no treatment or vaccine available for it. WebASF is well-established within parts of Europe, Russia and China, with a reservoir of infection in the wild boar population. Focus must be on ensuring ASF does not spread further. We urge all pig producers to ensure their biosecurity is tight, particularly vehicles, animals and people coming on to their units.
